Philosophy and Lifestyle
This is an experiential, ‘practical’ training. We do get into the roots of the practice and philosophy based on the Sutras (so helpful and important). But the way information is presented makes it easy for a Western mind to assimilate, for any mind for that matter. This course grounds students and focuses on practicality and experiencing the practice with full attention, full focus and driven by humility as opposed to ego or being “good at yoga”.
You will learn to accept yourself as a practitioner and teacher of yoga (your short comings, your strengths and all of you). My training is in Eastern and Western philosophy so I share from both places. Information in this course is easy to absorb and apply to daily living.
My love is simplicity, and I enjoy teaching practices that enable students understand their bodies and practice according to what is needed on any given day, dependent on what is happening in your body, health, your life and this includes mentally, emotionally as well as physically. You will become more familiar with and grounded in your true nature. This will make you a wonderful, loving teacher.
The main meditation we practice is called The Kelee Meditation Practice. This practice was developed by Ron Rathbun in California. Ron is a lecturer at UC San Diego. His work has been published in major medical journals and is still being researched as to it’s benefits. Ron works with medical professionals to help patients to heal from stress, anxiety and PTSD disorders. Look for Ron’s books on The Kelee Meditation on Amazon.com. The practice takes around 7 minutes to do each time, including reflection and journaling. This is a practice of “stillness of mind”.
In terms of mindfulness practices, we also cover concentration techniques which are sometimes referred to as meditation. These practices being in the present, self awareness, self acceptance and help free up your head space. You will contemplate living in line your values and will explore NLP and work on visualization as well as positive psychology. Once you have your own established mindfulness practice, you can teach others from that experience.
Ayurveda & Philosophy
In this lecture series, you'll learn the fundamental building blocks of Ayurveda to understand how it can help you in your daily life, and in the bigger picture. We'll look at the history and philosophy behind this ancient wisdom, Ayurveda's approach to nutrition, diet, lifestyle, and practices that can make a difference in your wellbeing and that of your students.
"Suzanne's Yoga For Wellness teacher training was transformational. The focus on alignment and foundations of yoga has completely changed my personal practice and will influence every class I teach. Suzanne helps to strip away the ego and jazziness that often accompanies yoga these days, and helps her students to understand the incredible benefits of yoga as a lifestyle choice. Her focus on mindfulness has changed the way I interact and react in daily life and I feel like a better mother, partner and citizen as a result of this training. Would highly recommend this course and really look forward to continuing my development with Suzanne." - Stephanie Cantrell. UK
This course is non - dogmatic. You will learn foundational practices (over 60 asana, core and breath techniques) that you can play with to create beautiful sequences of any length to teach or practice. You will learn SO MUCH here. I have taught for a long time and this is one of my favorite parts of teaching - helping students learn to create beautiful sequences. My main background is in Hatha, Ashtanga, Iyengar, Bikram and Forrest Yoga - with some other more obscure practices mixed in allow me to teach what I know will help students most.
Your training will be a culmination of different styles, taught in reasonable and logical ways that make sense. You will study with and without props (we also cover also a bit of Yin and Restorative) and help you to become familiar and understand your own body well. From this foundation, you can help students of all ages and abilities and keep everyone safe (including yourself). Yoga related injuries for teachers are common, so our first mission is to do our best to ensure our graduates know how to stay safe and keep their students safe.
You will learn to adjust sequences based on pacing, sequencing, etc. and will learn a simple, effective and creative ways of developing interesting classes for you, your family and students based on current state of health, age, fitness level, time of day, amount of time you have to teach a class, etc. Based on feedback from graduates and my own understanding, this training course which has been developed over several years is thorough. If you do the work asked and follow our lead, you can become a successful teacher of yoga and truly enjoy your career as a yoga teacher.
You will learn a variety of breathing techniques. We take our time during raining to help students cultivate a solid pranayama practice. You will look and feel different after really getting into this. You will look and feel bright, with more energy to focus, enjoy better sleep, a calmer mind (or more alert depending on which breath technique and what your need is at the time of practice). The breathing you will learn is kept simple because that is what works and what you and your students need on a daily basis, at a minimum. More advanced pranayama can be layered on later (most importantly, when you feel ready). To have a solid foundation in pranayama, you must have an established daily practice and you need to work on the basics for awhile. Mastering basics is the right way to practice and is plenty for most people.
For your anatomy lessons, you will be provided with practical, useful information to keep ourself and your students safe. Course materials become your property and can be used for reference as needed in the years to come.
This course is an all around life coaching, health and mindfulness program with asana, meditation and pranayama at the core. You will be given a solid foundation with great habits to draw on for the rest of your life's practice (and pass this to others if you so wish). Especially in the self development area of your practice. This is the highlight of our course and your mind is the true foundation of all you do in life. Upon graduation, you will have a beautiful practice to build on as you progress throughout your life.

Our studio is a short motorbike or taxi ride away from downtown Ho Chi Minh City in the outskirts called Thao Dien, An Phu, District 2. This is a beautiful area with a local, hip vibe; a developing yet quaint little neighborhood near the Saigon River with lots of great coffee shops to have a quiet meal or mix it up with local and expat others.
We have lots of chilled out places in the area with amazing local and western food where you can lounge around, read a book or do your homework. Accomodations near the studio range from very affordable to luxury. District 2 is a great place to call home for awhile as you train, focus on yourself and your studies. There are lots of quiet little streets to ride a bike (you can bike to class, most apartments and rental places would have a bike to borrow if you ask) or take a long walk in the evenings. It is also easy to rent a motorbike if you feel like scooting around. Take a motorbike taxi or a drive yourself over the Saigon Bridge over to downtown to see the markets, do a bit of shopping and catch a little Saigon city action on your day off. Or just kick back in District two and chill out.
Out of town guests
There are plenty of Air BnB's near Jiva Studio to come and stay in Vietnam while you train. With the 6 week program, you can get away form weekends or explore the city. Our area of HCMC is Thao Dien, District 2 and is a quaint town that has become a hot spot for travelers due to it's simple charm, awesome restaurants and easy walking, biking and daily living. Let us know if we can help to assist or advise.
